The lovely and talented Lizardin Bain: Unoriginal (love) NoteS has nominated me for The Sunshine Blogger Award. I could not be more honoured and thrilled…

  3. Nominate 11 bloggers and ask them 11 questions in turn

Lizardin’s Questions:

What is the funniest joke you know by heart? I can never remember a joke long enough to tell it. When I try, I always either miss a key detail or laugh so hard in the telling that the punchline is lost in my guffaws of laughter. I am not meant to ‘tell’ jokes: my best friend says that I am NOT funny but ‘I am a great audience’.

What kind of cult would you like to start? or why not? None!!! Not a one. I have a deep and abiding belief in God but I strongly feel that organised religion of any kind only serves to divide us. This question has actually occupied a great deal of my time – especially lately – and caused me the greatest angst I have ever known. I really do not get why we can’t all believe in God in our own way. Isn’t God big enough (and perfect enough) for all of us, no matter how we choose to come to Him?

What celebrity would you rate as a perfect 10? I think that ‘perfect’ is such an impossible, subjective and ephemeral concept. And based on what I have seen, celebrity is not the best training ground for any type of perfection except in a very cosmetic and superficial sense. But forced to choose, I will name Keanu Reeves. He is a fellow Canadian, and one of least ‘celebrity’ celebrities I see out there. He has a reputation for kindness, politeness and generosity; he has given millions to charity; he lives a very non-celebrity lifestyle; he travels by public transportation; he is the co-founder of X Artists’ Books; and when a stalker broke into his home, he calmly spoke with her until the police could come and take her to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.

Which fictional character would be the most boring to meet in real life? Scarlett O’Hara from Gone with the Wind. Her character was conceited, spoiled, petulant, selfish, self-centred, self-absorbed, a bully, an elitist and a racist (yes, I know that last one was historical). I would not have thing to say to her. And she would hate me.

What are some things that sound like compliments but are actually insults? An actual pick-up line I got once, as he stared down at me with obvious appreciation, “Don’t you have a sister who is fat?” and my answer, as I turned to walk away; “Nope. That was me. I just lost weight.”

What’s the closest thing to real magic? Connecting with someone – friend or lover – on a soul level. This has only happened to me a few times in my lifetime but those relationships are irreplaceable and precious to me…

What is the craziest thing one of your teachers has done? I had a lot of excellent teachers and a few mediocre ones. But sorry, none of them ever did anything even remotely crazy enough for me to recall it 40+ years later… I DID help throw one of my favourite teachers into the pool on the last day of high school. Still feel a bit bad about it…

What quote or saying do people spout but is complete BS? All I am coming up with is: “He has never looked better.” (said as they gaze upon a deceased person, lying in an open coffin).

If you could know the absolute and total truth to one question, what question would you ask? When we die, will God (or Buddha, or Allah, or…) just accept us all or is there really a religion (or lack thereof) that God will favour over the other?

What’s the most useless talent you have? I am not all that talented in much of anything except maybe writing. I CAN play (a truly awful rendition of) God Save the Queen on the harmonica, if that counts…

If animals could talk, which would be the rudest? Oh, cats. Hands down! (and I love cats, BTW)

I write what I feel. And I rarely know exactly what I feel until I write. I have lived long enough to have known many joys and many sorrows. I have made many mistakes; I have forgiven myself for a few… I have learned that there are lessons in every step of this journey, if we only take the time to pay attention… I hope you will feel free to pick and choose the stories that resonate for you…

  1. I love your answers!! I really agree with your Keanu and Scarlett answers. Damn right about “real magic”. And I obsess about the religion/existential issue 24/7 at this point in my life too. You are a good writer! Glad I have come to your blog recently! Thanks so much for the nomination.

  3. Congratulations. You totally deserve this.
Your questions are so so good. Especially the one about the cult. I though liked all of your answers. Your answer for “close to magic” was really awesome.
And thank you for nominating me. Means a lot.
