Something is Happening to the Space-Time Continuum

Lately, I have noticed a strange and alarming phenomenon that is happening to the space-time continuum. Time, it seems, has sped up.

It’s the strangest thing: my children – in their thirties (or almost) – tell me that time continues to go along for them as it has been for a decade. True, they would admit, time did seem to go much more slowly when they were in elementary school. But no, they are oblivious to the fact that life has inexplicably gone into warp speed for their parents.

People my age, however, all seem as aware of this strange occurrence as I am. Take the Super Bowl, for example. I don’t (gasp) watch football but I am always peripherally aware of the event because so many of my Facebook friends send out posts about what they will be eating, who will be singing at halftime and which team they are rooting for. Well, this year, I kid you not: they started talking about the latest Super Bowl mere weeks after the last one.

“Is there more than one Super Bowl a year?” I asked my husband, who was just as perplexed as I was that they were suddenly doing the event so soon after the last one. We had to look it up: somehow, in practically the blink of an eye – we discovered that a full year between one super bowl and the next had sped past us in the time it would take to snap your fingers.

What is this sorcery?? Is it perhaps a conspiracy??

I am sorry to tell you, it’s not just the Super Bowl. Last night, I finally got around to watching ‘that movie’ on Netflix. You know the one: it came out a year or two ago and everyone was talking about it. I thought it was about time that I finally see it, too. Well, as I am wont to do, I looked up an actor I recognised from ‘somewhere’ and what to my wondering eyes should appear but… a release date that indicated this movie was in theatres twelve years ago. Twelve! Years! Ago!

“Is it just me, or has time shifted to warp speed?” I asked my equally bewildered husband, as I gave him the release date of the movie.

“It’s not just you,” he confirmed, with great authority. “Time has definitely sped up.”

We are thinking about forming a Facebook page on the phenomenon. Something strange is going on here.

If you are of an age where this phenomenon is happening to you, you are welcome to join…

I write what I feel. And I rarely know exactly what I feel until I write. I have lived long enough to have known many joys and many sorrows. I have made many mistakes; I have forgiven myself for a few… I have learned that there are lessons in every step of this journey, if we only take the time to pay attention… I hope you will feel free to pick and choose the stories that resonate for you…

  1. Oh yes, Patti, I’m with you. I asked my kids about this recently and they laughed at me. No sympathy, nothing. My first mistake was asking my youngest son, who is in college. He’s clueless to the phenomenon. I definitely notice it a lot with movies and shows that we watch. Google is no longer my friend. I’ll Google one of the main actors or actresses and I’m automatically reminded how quickly time flies. Hang in there.

  2. Count me in with Deb — I’ll join that club! I cannot believe how quickly time passes. I feel like I’ve got windburn some days and I don’t know why! Oh – right! That’s the whirr of time whizzing by. Thanks for this sweet and fun post, Patti. So, so relatable. xo! 😘

  3. I’d like to propose the idea that it is those who are at our age ~ and also of high consciousness ~ for whom time is losing its meaning. The light writers say that we of the first waves are ascending now to the next dimension for humanity, and the rest will be along shortly.

PS It’s my understanding that we have some planetary upheaval in the forms of ecological overload and a planetary COVID lockdown between here and the next (huge) wave, just so you’ve got it in mind for planning purposes.

  4. Thanks for sharing!!.. I think that in the past we had a routine, go to work, have a family, etc… then one day one suddenly wakes up, family has left the nest, less work/retired and more time on one’s hands, so we decide to do all those things we dreamed about but didn’t do in the past, so much that we find we do not have enough time to do it all… 🙂

Think that time is keeping its steady pace, it is us, and our desire to learn and explore the universe, that is speeding up… 🙂

Hope all is well in your world and until we meet again..
    May your day be touched
by a bit of Irish luck,
    Brightened by a song
    in your heart,
    And warmed by the smiles
    of people you love.

  5. I attended a funeral this weekend and saw a few of my old elementary school teachers and classmates. It was shocking to me to see how much older we all are! I felt the exact feeling you are talking about and wept about it all evening—how did life get so busy? How has it been 15 years since I’ve seen some of them? 15! I made plans to see some of them in the following weeks, but I have a feeling that strange rushing of time will only keep accelerating.

  6. Is it because we’re one step closer to death than those in their 30’s? I don’t know… but I swear I turn my head and 3 weeks have passed. Which reminds me I need to do taxes since they’ll be due tomorrow.

      1. Ours are due April 15th which means I usually file on April 24th, but my husband retired last year and things have changed so I’m sucking it up and having a professional do it this time.

  7. Time speeding up? For sure, It’s a thing. The older I get, the busier life seems. So many opportunities, things to do, see and feel. I feel frustrated that I cannot get done all that I want to do in a day and retirement doesn’t seem to help at all. Rather it opened up more possibilities. However, I have noted that once your physical or mental abilities decline, time begins to slow dramatically. I even read a book about this concept once. My nearly 90 year old parents and many who live in aged care facilities with deteriorating bodies appear to me to have found the secret to slowing time. They complain that the days are so long, there is nothing to do and they might even say, death comes too slowly (for them). Hearing this, I feel more at ease with the current “time-warps,” and so I resolve to better my time management strategies to curtail time flying away.
Btw, I like your blog title. For I am a Wednesday’s child too!

    1. It’s lovely, how the Wednesday’s Children always ‘get’ the title 🙂 And thank you so much for your thoughtful reply… I was aiming at a silly, funny tone for a rather disconcerting issue, but I have been a bit surprised to find myself in such, empathetic, understanding company regarding this particular post. I HAVE wondered – often – how time is for seniors in a care facility. My Mom has mild dementia and is in a home herself, but for now, at least, she is content, able to get around and still quite cognizant. She tells me her days are full and (generally) quite happy, but I frequently wonder at the poor old souls I see who are bedridden and unable to communicate any longer. When I can, I always say hello to them and look them in the eye when I see them looking back. Yes, better a ‘time-warp’ than that… 😔💕

      1. I have often found the blogging world to be empathic, caring, understanding and it reassures me about the positives that bloggers can bring to the social media table – which is currently anything but empathic. When you acknowledge old souls in the care facility, with a smile, you have probably been the highlight of their day. That adage, a smile costs nothing to give but can mean everything to someone else, is never more true than for the lonely.

  8. You two are right about the speeding up of time, with time. Time has sped up greatly for me (and my wife) since I retired. Monday begins and the next thing I know it’s Friday. I have to check my calendar to make sure I’m not crazy. This happens every week, now! It’s very eerie…almost scary.
